
An abstract‘s composition sometimes comes together at the very end, when a piece is nearly complete. As is often the case with encaustic works, as their wax medium is quick to change at the touch of a flame. The trees in Birch Stand were not introduced until portions of the layered wax were removed in thin vertical strips, revealing white negative space underneath.
