A Locals art collector once said “If you own a Jimmy Abegg painting, it holds the room.” Things We Carry does just so, and well represents the classic Jimmy Abegg style his collectors love.
This 40 x 70-inch still life painting features four objects from Jimmy’s home. He painted them as he, a blind artist, sees them: soft curved outlines. The red orange objects, as a collection, carry a comradery of sorts, and recall objects of our own we have held onto.
In the background’s deep hued purple, the luminescence in Jimmy’s many layers of paint reveals a myriad of colors. The interaction between Things We Carry and the day’s descending light is playful.
